EDITORIAL: Roses and Thorns

The Roseburg News-Review---August 24, 2007

The projects and causes the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians choose to donate to each year reflect their concern for the welfare and growth of Douglas County communities.

Add a South County airport runway and new Umpqua Transit buses to the list of things the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians has helped fund.

Myrtle Creek will use the $30,000 it received from the tribe as part of the matching funds it needs to secure an $800,000 federal aviation grant to widen the municipal airport runway.c

Umpqua Transit will take the $25,000 it received and put it toward the purchase of three new vehicles, a move made possible by a $500,000 federal grant and state transportation funds.

Though the tribe is required by law to donate a certain percentage of its annual earnings to charity – a percentage it regularly exceeds – the projects and causes tribal leaders choose to donate to each year reflect their concern for the welfare and growth of Douglas County communities.
