The Roseburg News Review---May 6, 2008
Letter to the Editor--- Dave HopkinsIf a large group of men walking--or tottering--in red or pink patent leather heals won't get you talking, nothing will.
The Cow Creek Tribe and the Battered Persons Advocacy organized a thought provoking event to help raise awareness of the violence against women and children that exists.Dear Editor:
Now that the blisters have healed and the soreness in my legs and back are gone, I wanted to take an opportunity to thank Battered Persons Advocacy and the Cow Creek Tribe for sponsoring a wonderful event, "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes."
Because it was an inaugural event, I wondered if there would be much participation. Much to my surprise, it was very well attended.
The BPA staff and volunteers were incredible. From the planning, to the execution of a creative event that would help raise awareness of the violence women and children must endure, all was done professionally and with enthusiasm.
In addition, the event could not have happened without the assistance of the Cow Creek Tribe.
My sincere gratitude to the BPA staff and volunteers, and to the Tribe for a job very well done.
As for the walk itself, if you didn't get to witness it, make it a goal to do so next year.
If a large group of men walking -- or tottering -- in red or pink patent leather heals won't get you thinking and talking, nothing will.
As a participant in this years walk, I can't think of a better group to have walked that painful mile with. And yes, I walked with several specific women in mind.
I can never truly walk a mile in their shoes, but please know that I, among many, care.
Dave Hopkins
