The mission of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation has always been about “building people.” The focus of Foundation donations is on education and youth and strengthening families.
At the latest grant sharing ceremony at Seven Feathers Convention Center, the Foundation awarded over $400,000 in grants to improve to the quality of life for youth and families living in the traditional homelands of the Cow Creeks—Southern Oregon.
Douglas County schools and organizations that provide assistance to area youth received more than $150,000 in grants Tuesday from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.
The grants were presented at a ceremony at the Seven Feathers Convention Center in Canyonville. Nearly $407,000 in total grants were awarded to 42 organizations and school districts in seven Southern Oregon counties.
The foundation’s mission is to offer assistance in youth education, to strengthen youth and family, to provide positive youth development and to add to the quality of life for people in Douglas, Coos, Deschutes, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lane counties.
Since its creation in 1997 by the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, the foundation has awarded more than $8 million in grants for those in need.
Awards are made semi-annually. Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation funding decisions are separate from the philanthropic decisions made by the Cow Creek Tribal Board.
In Douglas County, grants ranged from $2,263 to $17,000 for a total of $151,900.
Following are the local recipients, how much each received and what the money will be used for.
Douglas County Grant Recipients:
- Roseburg Public Schools — $5,228 to support the elementary music program with purchase of keyboards, headphones, and splitters
- North Douglas School District — $8,000 to purchase and repair musical instruments in middle and high schools
- North Douglas School District — $10,000 to upgrade The Hungry Warrior kitchen at the high school to restaurant standard so food items can be sold to the community
- Oregon Children’s Foundation (Start Making a Reader Today) — $5,000 to support SMART in 21 schools and one pre-kindergarten school
- Oregon Shakespeare Festival — $15,000 to support the Title 1 School Visit Partnerships with actor residences, regional teacher training, materials, etc., for Glendale and Coquille
- Douglas High School in the Winston-Dillard School District – $15,258 to provide scientific calculators for the high school math program
- Elkton Community Education Center — $5,500 to support the student-run nursery by purchase of initial retail nursery stock and renovation of existing sheep shed and shade house
- South Umpqua School District, Myrtle Creek & Canyonville Parent Groups — $17,000 to provide playground equipment at both Myrtle Creek and Canyonville elementary schools
- Douglas C.A.R.E.S. — $17,000 for child abuse prevention
- Oregon Coast Community Action Committee, Great Afternoons/Reedsport Community Learning Center — $16,000 to increase staff
- Oakland Cooperative Playschool — $4,151 to purchase supplies and materials and to provide teacher training
- Douglas County Cancer Services Committee — $2,263 to enhance outreach
- Senior Volunteer Foundation of Douglas County — $15,000 to support operating costs and to cover volunteer support costs
- Sutherlin Community Resource Center — $10,000 to support operational costs
- Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped — $6,500 to provide furnishings for a new traumatic brain injury residence.
