The Roseburg News Review---June 21, 2007

The mission of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation has always been about “building people.” The focus of Foundation donations is on education and youth and strengthening families.

At the latest grant sharing ceremony at Seven Feathers Convention Center, the Foundation awarded over $400,000 in grants to improve to the quality of life for youth and families living in the traditional homelands of the Cow Creeks—Southern Oregon.

Douglas County schools and organizations that provide assistance to area youth received more than $150,000 in grants Tuesday from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.

The grants were presented at a ceremony at the Seven Feathers Convention Center in Canyonville. Nearly $407,000 in total grants were awarded to 42 organizations and school districts in seven Southern Oregon counties.

The foundation’s mission is to offer assistance in youth education, to strengthen youth and family, to provide positive youth development and to add to the quality of life for people in Douglas, Coos, Deschutes, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lane counties.

Since its creation in 1997 by the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, the foundation has awarded more than $8 million in grants for those in need.

Awards are made semi-annually. Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation funding decisions are separate from the philanthropic decisions made by the Cow Creek Tribal Board.

In Douglas County, grants ranged from $2,263 to $17,000 for a total of $151,900.
