In the past ten years, the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation has donated approximately $8.7 million to educational and social service organizations in Southern Oregon.
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary Tuesday by awarding $433,223 to 54 organizations from seven counties in Southern Oregon.
Representatives from Coos, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lane counties accepted grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 for their nonprofits.
The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians negotiated a tribal/state agreement in 1997 providing for tribal charitable giving. Consequently, a percentage of net gaming revenues from all Oregon tribal casinos are set aside to benefit local communities.
In the past 10 years, the foundation has funded 815 grants totaling $8.7 million, with $3.5 million benefiting Douglas County.
In the 21st round of giving, the following nonprofits in Douglas County received grants:
- Oregon Children’s Foundation - SMART Douglas County will receive $5,000 to provide SMART in K-3 grades in Camas Valley, Canyonville, Drain, Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Riddle and Yoncalla.
- Roseburg School District No. 4 - Fiber Optic Cable Project will receive $5,000 to support high-speed connectivity to the school districts of Camas Valley, Drain, Elkton, Glide, Oakland, Winston, Yoncalla and outlying areas of Roseburg.
- South Umpqua School Foundation --- will receive $10,000 to support the renovation of science classrooms at South Umpqua High School.
- Umpqua Community Action Network --- Head Start will receive $15,000 for playground equipment for the Green Area Head Start classroom.
- Douglas County Children’s Center --- will receive $15,000 to support the increasing number of medical exams and counseling sessions involved in child abuse prevention.
- Oregon Coast Community Action --- Great Afternoons will receive $15,000 to support the Great Afternoons childcare program.
- Umpqua Community College Foundation --- will receive $7,500 to assist with childcare grants for students at UCC.
- Archdiocese of Portland/St. Vincent de Paul (Myrtle Creek)--- will receive $15,000 to assist with the purchase of a new cargo truck for the food pantry.
- Adolescent Day Treatment Center of Douglas County, Riverside Center --- will receive $7,500 for partial support of a psychiatrist for medication management and oversight.
- Archdiocese of Portland/St. Francis Community Kitchen---will receive $10,000 to provide operating support to the Sutherlin Community Kitchen.
- Camp Millennium --- will receive $10,000 to provide scholarships for children to attend camp this summer.
- Central Douglas County Family YMCA --- will receive $15,000 to support the purchase of a new dishwashing system.
- General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, (Roseburg Adventist Community Services) --- will receive $3,600 in matching funds to provide dental care to low-income and uninsured individuals one day a month.
- Roseburg Rotary Foundation (Build Our Kids Program)---will receive $5,000 to support two phases of the Build Our Kids Program, the media campaign and the individual community’s initiative.
- South County Resource Centers, (also known as the First Step Parent Child Training Center) --- will receive $5,000 to support the supervisory expenses of the Vista Project and the yearly membership application fees.
- Sutherlin Seniors --- Sutherlin Senior Center. Inc.---will receive $15,000 to support the purchase and installation of three fire sprinkler safety systems.
- The Volunteer Foundation of Douglas County --- will receive $5,000 to provide funding to the Foster Grandparents Program, RSVP, and the Senior Companion Program.
- Umpqua Community Development Corp. --- will receive $15,000 toward a new commercial play structure for the Princeton Court Apartments in Roseburg.
