In April of 2006 human remains were found on BLM managed lands near Gold Hill, Oregon.

The remains were recovered by the Jackson County Medical Examiner in an effort to determine the circumstances surrounding the burial.

No associated material was found with the remains.

Historic documents and ethnographic sources indicate the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians have utilized the area from at least the early 19th Century.
