Memorial Day Events Scheduled around Douglas County

Sue Shaffer from the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe will speak at the Veterans Remembrance Ceremony at Canyonville City Hall during the Memorial Day Weekend.

The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is holding Memorial Day celebrations around Oregon this weekend, including several in Douglas County.

The first celebration, a Veterans Remembrance Ceremony, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Canyonville City Hall, 250 N. Main.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5714 is hosting the ceremony.

Guest speakers will include Sue Shaffer from the Cow Creek Tribe, former Rep. and WWII veteran Bill Markham and Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg.

An Air National Guard flyover has been requested. For information contact Mayor Chuck Spindel at (541) 863-1602.

A community barbecue will be served by the Military Order of the Purple Heart at 4 p.m. Sunday at Reedsport High School, 22nd Street and Highway 101.

Then, at 7 p.m., the 29 Palms U.S. Marine Air Ground Combat Center Band will present a free concert at the high school. Tickets are required and are available at Umpqua Bank, Bank of America or the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber office.

Reedsport will also have a parade on Memorial Day beginning at noon. The parade will travel down Highway 38 in Old Town.

The U.S. Army’s Green Beret Skydivers will parachute in to start the Memorial Service at 1:30 p.m. at Hahn Memorial Park.

The U.S. Coast Guard will present the colors. The 29 Palms U.S. Marine Band will play music. For more information call Joe Mirvis at (541) 361-9080.

The Douglas County Veteran’s Forum is sponsoring the 2008 Memorial Day Tribute in Roseburg on Monday.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Roseburg National Cemetery, 1770 W. Harvard Ave. Organizers said this year’s event is shaping up to be bigger than in past years.

The Avenue of Flags will be placed by Vietnam Veterans Association and Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Association.

The Roseburg High School Jr. ROTC Color Guard will present the flags. VFW District 12 will fire a gun salute and play “Taps.”

VA Director Susan Yeager is the guest speaker.

An Air National Guard flyover was requested. A picnic will follow the ceremony at noon at Stewart Park. For more information contact Dirk Kruysman at (541) 673-6341.
